The fifth century collection of sayings, A New Miscellany, records the tale of the East Jin literary figure Wang Huizhi of Shanyin, son of the great calligrapher Wang Xizhi.
15世纪的语录集《世说新语》记载，东晋名士山阴王徽之，即大书法家王羲之之子故事。
One night, when snow was falling and nothing could be seen but an expanse of white, Wang Huizhi suddenly thought of his good friend Dai Kui and in high spirits ordered a boat and set off to visit him.
一天晚上，大雪飘飘，放眼看去，天地一片洁白。王徽之忽然间想起了好朋友戴逵，兴致大起，就命人开船，前去探望。
These two friends’ places are 200 li distant from each other by river.
两人所居住之地间的距离是二百里水路。
We can imagine how high Wang Huizhi’s spirits must have been to brave the snow, ice and the wind.
冰天雪地，加上一宿的强劲的西北风，我们可以想像王徽之的兴致是多么的高涨！
What was even more astonishing was the fact that on the morning of the second day, having, with some difficulty, reached the entrance to his friend’s house, Wang Huizhi made the surprising decision not to land and visit his old friend, but told his attendants to order the boatman to take the boat back.
更令人拍案叫绝的是，到了第二天早上，好不容易来到友人的门前，王徽之又做出了一个令所有人都大吃一惊的举动。他吩咐随从：不必上岸去看老朋友了，要船夫把船开回去。
Everybody was curious and asked him why he had done this.
大家都感到非常奇怪，问他为什么要这样做？
Wang Huizhi said: “I came on an impulse and am returning on an impulse. What
need to see Dai?”
王徽之说：“我本乘兴而来，兴尽而返，何必见戴？”
This is the simple beauty of the intoxicating so-called Wei-Jin lifestyle.
这就是魏晋风度，一种纯美的令人心醉神仪的风度。
The value of the beauty lies in the process itself and not in any external objective or aim.
美的价值是过程的本身，而不是外部的某一个目的。
